Black Pastor Booed, Gay-Activist Group Welcomed

The Snoqualmie Valley (Wash.) School Board met Thursday night to try to overcome a controversy stemming from a Martin Luther King Day assembly in which a black pastor was booed — by teachers.

The Rev. Ken Hutcherson spoke at Mount Si High School last month, sharing his own struggle for equality, as well as Dr. King’s struggle. Hutcherson is a strong advocate for the defense of marriage, but it’s a topic he never mentioned at the assembly.

Hundreds of parents and community members packed the board meeting, which became more about gay rights than apologies.

“Teachers — five or six — standing for the Gay-Straight Alliance blasted the board for inviting me,” Hutcherson told CitizenLink. The board was told to “stand up for gay students.”

One of the teachers — one who booed him, Hutcherson said — accused Hutcherson of taking away gay rights and suggested “a movement to bring back slavery.”

Hutcherson said, “It’s time for Christians to stand up. We have taken this for too long.”

The Rev. Ken Hutcherson was booed at a Martin Luther King Jr. rally. In his Stoplight video commentary, Stuart Shepard delves into the exceptionally rude behavior.

Watch the Stoplight video because it brings up the point that Hutch wasn’t even talking about homosexuality or marriage and yet because that was his belief he was treated badly.  Hutch also asks what would have happened if it were a gay speaker and Christian teachers would have acted in a similar manner?  He says that they would have been without a job by the end of the day.

Very interesting.

Wonkette reports, in their usual crass way, the whole sordid story of a political sex scandal that doesn’t seem to be making the news (WARNING: Wonkette is a liberal rag of a blog that is actually rejoicing over this crime.) Stan McGee, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s assistant secretary for policy and planning was busted for forcibly molesting a 15 year old while he was in a very nice resort here in Florida. Mr. McGee is openly gay and has participated in a very public union to his partner. He is of course a high profile person in Massachusetts.

There are all kinds of ways to report this story: Why hasn’t the MSM picked up on this more? … is this just expected of gay democrats? Is his partner devastated and wanting a “divorce?” What does this say, if anything, about gay male monogamy? Ephebophilia? Public sex? The notorious reputation of gay males having random sex? There are again, alllll kinds of ways to turn and twist this story.

Of McCain, Romney and Alternatives

February 7th, 2008 by Paul Webster Comments (7)

Pdub 3

Last week I was speaking to a friend of mine about the Republican Primary. She is a thoughtful Christian from Georgia and she told me that she could not vote for a Mormon and was voting for John McCain.

Now when both of us were working in the House of Representatives, we had few good things to say about the gentleman from Arizona. In fact, he often thwarted many of a conservative legislative initiative and could always be counted on to defect the Republican Caucus and side w/ the Ds. The fact that he initiated the regulation of free political speech, contrary to the first amendment, and an amnesty bill that the country had to rise up and kill, demonstrate that John McCain is a fair weather Republican at best.

I knew, therefore, that my friend’s decision to support McCain could hardly be due to his stellar qualities and more with her concerns with Romney. “I can’t bring myself to vote for a Mormon,” she said.

She explained that having Romney as the Chief Executive would serve to legitimize a deceptive, pagan alternative to Christianity. It would provide a platform for Mormonism, install Mormon chaplains and prayers in the Congress and military, and give followers of Joseph Smith unprecedented access to the White House. The biggest problem would be that it would make Christians who care about defending the particulars of the Faith ( like Who is Jesus?, Why is his death on the cross significant? and How grace through faith works?) seem like nit-picking nay sayers. (Gosh, why do the Christians have to be hatin’ on everyone who isn’t just like them?)

This angle has some merit. Who wants to put a self-identified pagan into the highest office in the land? Furthermore, even when you want to put a righteous man in office, it doesn’t always pan out. Just think of those long lines of rigteous, Baal embracing kings in the OT.

But then I thought this argument only works when the alternative to the pagan, is a believer. It really doesn’t mean much when the choice for the White House is a pagan, a pagan, a pagan, and a one-time Muslim. In other words, if our litmus test is going to be faith, then show me the real deal or don’t bother.

What this really points up is that, in politics, you rarely choose against the ideal. Instead, you choose against the other candidates with all their short comings, various priorities, and miss-steps. The front-runner doesn’t have to be all that, they just have to be a little better than the competition.

I am very excited to let you know that two friends will be guest bloggers here at Everyday Thoughts Collected.  Paul Webster and Mike Ensley.  Their bio’s are on the About page.

I met Paul several years ago through a mutual friend when he was working on Capital Hill.  He is a terrific writer and much smarter, and definitely funnier, than the average policy wonk.  What’s great about him is that he readily shows the compassion of Christ right alongside taking on the tough cultural issues of the day.

Many of this blogs readers already know Mike Ensley.  He’s a youngin’ that I truly enjoy as a friend but also respect as a co-worker.  He is a fantastic writer and I have no doubt he will add a lot when he posts to this blog.

I am praying about asking more folks to help contribute to the blog and please let us know what you think :).

Romney Drops Out

Romney

Plans to say during CPAC speech:

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or (Barack) Obama would win….”

My journey of support: Thompson-Huckabee-Romney and now back to Huckabee.  Wow.

Porn - 3 Reasons to Stop Now

February 7th, 2008 by Randy Comments (2)

Joe Dallas is an incredibly gracious and smart man. I found the following article very informative and wanted to share it with you. It is published with permission.

Porn - 3 Reasons to Stop NOW - Joe Dallas

This is the first of a ten part series by Joe Dallas on recovery from pornography

If you’re a Christian man using pornography, you are, unfortunately, far from alone. Over 18 % of the men polled in a Zogby/Focus on the Family survey, for example, identified themselves as Christians who watch porn. Studies quoted in Newsweek magazine suggested that as many as 30% of the ministers interviewed had indulged, and during an informal polling at the 1996 Promise Keepers Men’s Conference, one out of three men admitted they “struggled” with pornography.

So why should they - or you - stop now? Let me offer three reasons.

I was driving home from work tonight and the news was dark and depressing. I bought one of those cheapy car receivers for XM Satellite radio (had it for almost 18 months and hopefully will never turn back) and was listening to Fox News talk about all the horrible deaths in the storms across the South last night. Then I turn to one of the talk feeds and they are NON STOP whining about how stupid the American electorate must be. So I turn to CNN and they are talking about how the murderous monsters of Al Qeada are using children as young as six years old for propaganda.  Not only that, the barbarians kidnapped an 11 year old to force his poor parents to give them 100,000 US Dollars.

Tragedy abounds.

I’d had it. There is only so much horror and complaining you can take in and today my limit was even lower than usual. I then turned to one of my favorite XM Stations, XM 62 “The Suite” which is an R&B feed and Mariah Carey (whom I think is incredibly talented) blew my socks off. I am sure this song is not new but for some reason I just heard it this evening. The lyrics are listed after the jump and I think you will agree that the timing was perfect to hear her worship the Lord in this song.  The lyrics were right on time for me and put things back in proper perspective.

How Evil Are You?

February 6th, 2008 by Randy Be The First to Comment ...

One of my facebook friends sent me an “app” to help determine how evil I am.  I have a better test … just ask:

So, Randy, how evil are you?

I am not exactly sure but I bet if you try to take my ice cream away, we’d find out pretty quick.

BOO!
